Survey Questions

Following are the questions sent to the candidates. In addition to yes or no answers, candidates were given room to comment.

1. Would you be willing to enact a non-discrimination policy within your office as related to the hiring and retention of openly gay and lesbian personnel?

2. Do you believe that sexual orientation by itself should be reason to deny access to any and all areas of housing and employment?

3. Would you support state or local legislation that would make it unlawful to discriminate based on sexual orientation in areas of housing, employment, and public accomodation, if this legislation exempted religious organizations, and did not ask for affirmative action or quotas?

4. Would you support Ohio House bill 257 that adds sexual orientation to the Ethnic Intimidation (Hate Crimes) law?

5. The Hawaii Supreme Court is expected to rule in mid-1997 on whether same gender marriages are legal in Hawaii. How would you vote or speak out on any bills presented in the Ohio Legislature attempting to bar the legality of same gender marriages performed in other states?

A. I would support any legislation that would bar the legality of same gender marriages.

B. I would be against any legislation that would bar the legality of same gender marriages.

6. How would you vote or speak out on the military's current "don't ask, don't tell” policy?

A. In favor of the current policy.

Stonewall Akron survey

Stonewall Akron distributed a separate questionnaire to candidates in the Akron and Canton areas. The results were made available to the Chronicle and Ohioans Against Discrimination to be used for making endorsements in those races. Those questions are:

2. Rights of all persons to employment, housing, public accomodations and government services without discrimination on the basis of homosexual, bisexual, or heterosexual orientation.

3. Issuance (or retention) of a written policy prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation for your office employees.

4. Extension of employment benefits to same-sex life partners that are comparable to those provided to married couples.

5. Continue free and voluntary HIV testing with adequate counseling and guaranteed anonymity.

6. Support or co-sponsorship of legislation requiring all employers who contract with any governmental agency to adopt a written policy prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation.

7. Support or co-sponsorship of a bill to add sexual orientation to civil rights laws to prohibit employment discrimination

8. Support or co-sponsorship of a bill to add sexual orientation to civil rights laws to prohibit discrimination in housing.

9. Support or co-sponsorship of a bill to add sexual orientation to civil rights laws to prohibit discrimination in public accommodations.

10. Support education of the public regarding AIDS prevention techniques that include explicit instructions regarding safer sex practices such as the use of dental dams and condoms.

11. Support education in the public schools on sexuality, birth control methods, and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS.

12. Support or oppose ballot initiatives that prohibit the passage of laws ending discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. (i.c. Colorado Amendment 2) 13. Support a bill that would extend the rights of marriage to same-sex couples.
